Mitchell
Dann Mitchell Dann has spent over 20 years working with healthcare start-ups, serving as a venture capitalist, advisor, entrepreneur and executive. Mitchell founded Sapient Capital, L.P. and is Principal of Sapient Capital Management, L.L.C., the management company for the fund. In addition, he currently serves on the Board of Directors of Hemosphere, Inc, TranS1, Inc., and ValenTx, Inc.. Mitch is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Urologix (NASDAQ: ULGX). He previously served as a board member for Mitralife which was acquired by ev3. Mitch also serves on the Advisory Board of the Medical Technology Leadership Forum, a not for profit organization dedicated to understanding critical issues affecting advanced medical technology. After receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, Mitchell joined Investment Advisers, Inc. (IAI) in 1982 as a buy side analyst following emerging growth companies in the Upper Midwest. In 1983, he co-founded the venture capital division of Investment Advisers, Inc, called IAI Venture Capital Group. From 1983 to 1991, funds under management grew to over $150 million and Mitchell served successively as vice president, partner and managing partner. During his tenure, his investment focus became healthcare. While at IAI Venture Capital Group, Mitchell was responsible for investments in 18 companies and several venture capital partnerships. Mitchell's career at IAI included responsibilities as Chairman of Oncotherapeutics, Inc., a cancer therapy company (now a subsidiary of Biomira, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIOM)); as a member of the board of directors of: Endotherapeutics, Inc., inventor of the disposable trocar (acquired by US Surgical Corporation, since acquired by Tyco, Inc. (NYSE: TYC)); Endosonics, Inc., intravascular ultrasound (acquired by JOMED); Teltech, Inc., technical information provider (acquired by Sopheon PLC) and Delphax Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: DLPX), computerized document production. He also was responsible for investments in Digital Microwave Corporation (now DMC Stratex Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: STXN)); International Healthcare Corporation; Mycogen, Inc. (acquired by Dow Chemical Co. (NYSE: DOW)); Quantum Health Resources, Inc. (acquired by Olsten); Tricare (now Transcend Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRCR)); Neurocare (now Paradigm); and several other companies. Mitchell Dann formed M. Dann & Co. in April 1991 to provide strategic, financing and management assistance to emerging medical device and healthcare service firms. Services were provided as a principal as well as on a project basis. During the nineties, a significant portion of Mitchell's time was dedicated to Urologix (NASDAQ: ULGX), a company he co-founded. Mitchell was a Board Member at Urologix for 14 years and served as Chairman of the Board from 1993-2003, and as acting CEO on two separate occasions. M. Dann & Company also performed consulting projects which included business opportunity assessments and business strategy development such as: new business development, investment evaluation, due diligence and start up business evaluations. Clients included ArthroCare Corporation (NASDAQ: ARTC), Endosonics, Inc., Endotherapeutics, Inc., Investment Advisers, Inc., InterWest Partners, LecTec Corporation, Novel Biomedical and Sangstat Medical (NASDAQ: SANG). In 2000, Sapient Capital was formed to bring capital as well as expertise to innovative healthcare companies. Mitchell is currently the Principal of Sapient Capital Management L.L.C., the General Partner of the General Partner of Sapient Capital, L.P. Sapient Capital L.P. is a $26 million venture capital fund dedicated to investing in the healthcare field, with an emphasis on medical devices. |
